Homework

Tri-weekly homework to be handed in two days after being assigned. For correctness. Not before test. Can re-do for full credit.

Lecture

Answer questions in general on current homework. Answer specific questions on homework passed back.

Shake things up: Lap around school, jumping jacks, sit on desks.

Leave enough flexibility in schedule to allow covering some material twice.

"You will see this again."

State the goal of the chapter/section.

Lecture over section, then do several (not assigned) homework problems.

Testing

No Monday tests. (Probably Wednesday)

Worksheet covering important concepts for the week handed out Monday. Nearly identical quiz on Friday. One review question.

Funny questions halfway through final.

Grading

Chance to make up one test question (of student's choosing) in front of class with no notes.

Drop lowest test/quiz grade.

Required notes/old tests & quizzes.

Other

Wikipedia reports on math.

Non-math/humorous lectures.

Uncle Paul's Fundamental Components of Mathematics:

  • Nomenclature (what stuff is called)
  • Rules (what you're allowed to do with the stuff)
  • Methods/Techniques (ways to do things with the stuff)
  • Rote memorization (memorizing the stuff)
  • Historical (how old guys came up with this stuff)

No sleeping, but no shame in admitting sleepiness and trying to stay awake.

Of all the math teachers you've had, what were your favorite/least favorite policies (hand in homework every day, no calculators, etc)?
